Humanrace by Pharrell Williams

It's nice to see that men's skincare is becoming more normalised and popular. And it definitely helps to have famous men spreading the important message of moisturising.

Pharrell Williams is a man of many talents – singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, composer, fashion designer… And, yes, a skincare entrepreneur.

Pharrell founded the gender-neutral skincare line Humanrace in the pivotal 2020. The goods are clean and effective, but they also come in recyclable and refillable packaging. The brand philosophy states: “We believe that the way our products make you feel when you use them, wear them, or see them in your home is just as important as their function and quality. That's why we only consider a product successful if it is necessary, useful, and beautiful.”

Named after the star's grandfather, Papa Tui, who taught him the power of personal presentation, the new men's grooming products include moisturisers, eye creams, body washes and tattoo lotions.

The PAPATUI statement says: “Guys Deserve Better. With PAPATUI, looking better and feeling better comes naturally. We formulate products that help guys feel good for themselves and the people who count on them.”

It's also important to point out, that Rock's new brand donates body care and shower products to youth groups focus on at-risk or less privileged youth. They believe that “confidence is critical in the teenage years,” and “having access to quality body care products is important”.

It’s been my lifelong dream to create these hair products and bring some of my mother’s teaching to life. We started by prioritizing the needs of textures hair like mine and others who lack moisture and strength. It was important to honor past rituals while infusing our personal touch by adding advanced science to build new sacred rituals.

Check the list below to learn which were the most successful celebrity beauty brands in 2023 based on revenue and social media popularity.

At the beginning of the year, we also talked about the design and branding trends, that we’re going to see in 2024. And, like we predicted, many skincare brands are sticking to minimalistic designs and the “less is more” mentality. Of course, here and there we do see some celebrity brands embracing the whole colour palette, but it is in line with their style and message (e.g. Lady Gaga and Drew Barrymore).

It’s cool and useful to research celebrity brands for inspiration, but the main takeaway should be the importance of niche, your target audience and brand message. All of these celebrity brands have a clear mission or a specific target audience in mind — often both. When working on your skincare brand, think about who is your desired customer, why they need your product and how your product will impact their lives, as well as how it will look like in their home.
